Amanda generously shares some of her secrets below.

What does Project Playdate do? Can you take us ‘behind the  scenes’ and share some of the inspiration for Project Playdate?

Project Playdate is an award winning alternative-to-babysitting service that hosts social and educational playdates and pajama parties at NYC’s most exclusive venues for kids. With enriching drop off pajama parties, entertaining wedding or special event child care, and cultural daytime field trips, we have just the experience for any kid!

Project Playdate started as a one-off “parents night out” pajama party fundraiser to support a mission helping local women and children in need. Because of the fundraiser’s success Project Playdate transformed, over time, into a comprehensive social enterprise that continues to act as the fundraising arm for it’s 501(c)3 umbrella non-profit, Powerhouse NYC

What common mistakes do you see parents making while planning entertainment experiences for kids?

I often see parents spend an excessive amount of money to create a lavish birthday party for their children, which although wonderful, is not necessary. With the right entertainment, leadership, activities and supplies, they can create a unique and unforgettable experience for their children without breaking the bank

What don’t parents know about planning kid’s birthday parties that they need to know?

Hiring a few extra babysitters or additional child care staff, even when parents are on site, can significantly contribute to a less stressful and overall successful day. Purchasing some extra crafts and toys are also super helpful during any downtime in between activities or entertainment.

What questions should parents be asking kid’s party planners that they don’t know to ask?

When I am planning any sort of children’s party, I make sure that there is a strong understanding of the schedule. I’d want to know exactly how long any entertainment I’ve hired will last and make sure to have activities planned down to the minute. The kids won’t know that there is this much structure going on behind the scenes, but instead will experience a party that keeps them engaged and having fun the whole time!

What’s your best piece of advice for parents planning a birthday party for kids?

Be involved in the party planning as best as you can, but when it’s time to party, don’t forget that it’s a special day for you too! The experience will be so much more meaningful to your child and guests if you are present, happy, and stress-free!
