8 Goofy Ways to Make Your Kids Laugh

how to make kids laugh

There are very few things that can beat the sound of kids laughing.

As a Dad and professional children’s magician in NYC, I’ve come to understand the nuances of what kids think is funny.

Because making kids laugh is so much fun, I thought I’d share a few of my secrets…

Read this and then enjoy every giggle, smile and belly-laugh that ensues!

Physical Comedy

Slipping on a banana peel, running into a wall, or going to absurd lengths to overcome an obstacle (remember Lucille Ball at the assembly line?) are classic examples of physical comedy.

If you, like me, have laughed out loud while watching The Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton, The Three Stooges, Charlie Chaplin, Lucille Ball, or Robin Williams, then you know how funny this kind of comedy can be.

Here are some ways to make your child laugh with physical comedy:

  • Play a game to see who can make the silliest face.

  • Start talking and then pretend to fall asleep. Make loud snoring noises. Wake up, begin talking again, and fall back asleep.

  • Move in super-slow motion

Silly Props

If you want to see your child laugh out loud, use an everyday item for something that it’s not meant to be used for.

Here are some ways to make kids laugh with silly props:

  • Make their elbows squeak! The secret is to hide one of these squeaky toys in your hand while you squeeze their elbow, arm, etc.

  • When the phone rings, pick up the sponge and say, “Hello?” After several failed attempts, pick up another object (like a shoe) and say a little louder, “HELLLOO?!!”

  • Try to wear something that’s too big. Then put it on them and say, “Wait. Where did you go?”

Silly Words

Some words, like “osh-gosh-bagosh,” are funny because they don’t make any sense.

Other words make kids laugh because they’re out of context. For example, “The colors of the American Flag are red, white and dishwasher.”

To make your child laugh with silly words, try out these goofy ideas:

  • Speak in gibberish or add a non-sense word to a normal sentence.

  • Instead of saying, “Want to come with me to run errands?” you could say, “Who wants to take a ride in the spaghettio?”

  • Talk in a funny voice.

These are just a few ways I get kids beaming and belly-laughing during my show.

I sincerely hope these ideas end up adding as much joy to your life as they have mine!
