5 Things About Outdoor Magic Shows Your Parents Won’t Tell You

Does this childhood experience sound familiar to you?

As a kid growing up, there was no such thing as too much fresh air.

Bubble lawn mowers, riding bikes, playing with friends…. our parents would insist we spend as much time outside as possible.

As a parent today, I still share this sentiment. We try to spend as much time outside as a family as possible.

But here’s the rub: when it comes to arranging a fun, engaging and memorable entertainment experience, you should avoid having the magic show outdoors at all costs

Blasphemy! I know…

…but as a full-time children’s magician, I’ve performed for thousands of parties and worked with a lot of parents over the past 10 years. In my experience, these are the top 5 reasons to move entertainment indoors whenever possible.

1. Summer temperatures range between 75-102 degrees — but humidity can make it feel much hotter.

Hot, humid and sticky weather makes children cranky, which means they will not have a good time. They’ll also be uncomfortable when they’re squinting and the sun is in their eyes.

2. There are countless distractions outside

Sudden wind gusts blow props over and kick up dirt. Insects, creepy-crawly things, sticks, grass and strangers passing by are all potential distractions that interfere with everyone’s enjoyment of the show.

3. Inclement weather can be sudden and unexpected

Unfortunately, I’ve seen time and time again how – on a bright and sunny day – lightning, rain or a torrential downpour turned a really fun time into sadness, disappointment and frustration.

4. It can be difficult to hear a performance outside

The acoustics outside aren’t very good. It’s also hard for anyone to enjoy the entertainment if they’re trying to ignore all of the ambient noise from planes, traffic, etc.

5. Balloons will pop easily

Balloons will pop because of the heat. They also burst when they contact grass or hot pavement, which can lead to tears and disappointment.

These are the top 5 reasons to avoid planning an outdoor magic show.

I’ll perform any time and anywhere, of course. I’ve had the honor of performing in almost every type of venue imaginable, and take pride in always doing the best show possible.

But if you have the choice, move the show indoors. Trust me. You’ll be glad you did (and so will your guests)
