Birthday Party Guest List Questions: You Asked, I Answered!

I get a lot of questions about birthday party planning, and I’m always happy to help!

In this post, I’ll share my responses to the most popular questions parents have asked me about putting together a guest list for their child’s party.

How many kids should I invite? The answer to this question depends on your personal comfort level, budget and the party venue. I recommend making sure your child’s best friend is available before you set the party date.

Is there a general guideline? There’s an “age plus 1” guideline that suggests inviting your child’s age plus one more. So if your son or daughter is turning 5, you could invite 6 kids.

Do I need to invite siblings? You can, but you don’t have to. By not inviting them, you’re giving them an opportunity to create their own social circle and interests.

Should I invite the entire class? Most (although not all) parents agree that inviting the entire class is… a lot. All of the anticipation and excitement can be over-stimulating, and as a general rule, keeping the party small and structured will be more fun for everyone.

What if I still want my child to be able to celebrate with the entire class?

  • Ask your son or daughter’s teacher about how special occasions (like birthdays) are handled. You don’t want to bake cupcakes for the entire class and find out there are nut allergies!
  • Some classes have a “Month Party” where they celebrate everyone whose birthday falls within the month (example: February 2012 babies)
  • Remember: communication is key. Some teachers may even let you throw a small party during school!
