Easy Magic Tricks for Beginner Magicians: My Top 5 Picks

easy magic tricks for beginner magicians

Looking for easy magic tricks to get for a beginner magician?

Many parents tell me about the challenges they face trying to find the right magic trick. Whether it’s…

  • Grappling with which magic trick to choose: (“Do you want the hook coin, folding coin or coin with another coin inside it?”)

  • Deciphering ad copy that sounds too good to be true: (“This magic trick requires no practice and you’ll look like a real magician!”)

  • Or wondering how much you should spend: (“You could get the $10 magic trick, but there’s also the $100 version which works like a gem.”)

…selecting magic tricks can be a trick in itself!

My Criteria for Recommending a Magic Trick

So, to make choosing magic tricks an easier, more transparent, and wallet-friendly process for you, I’ve created a list of 5 easy magic tricks that are ideal for the beginner magician.

All of my recommendations meet the following criteria:

  • I’ve bought the magic trick and performed it myself
  • It’s easy-to-do or self-working (for 7 year old’s and up)
  • And it costs less than $50.00

Presenting 5 Easy Magic Tricks

Ready? In no particular order, here they are:

1. Professional Scotch & Soda -DVD and Gimmick

The magician causes a copper coin to switch places with a silver coin… while they are held in someone else’s hands! I first saw this magic trick performed at a magic shop when I was 7 years old. I bought it right away. Easy-to-do, and this version comes with the DVD and gimmick.

2. David Blaine Discovery (Stripper) Deck

This trick deck is NOT examinable, but it does allow a beginner magician to perform amazing card tricks, mind reading tricks, and more. No sleight-of-hand needed – just a little bit of practice. My first trick deck of cards came in a magic set by Marshall Brodein.

3. Fantasma Toys Pen Thru Bill with DVD

Imagine being able to magically push a pen through a borrowed dollar bill and remove it… without making any holes, of course! I remember watching David Copperfield do a similar effect on national television. This version is perfect for the beginner magician, comes with all of the props, and an instructional DVD. (PS. I highly recommend visiting Fantasma Magic Shop in NYC. Their address is 421 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001).

4. Magic Makers Aluminum Cups & Balls

This is a classic of magic that every beginner magician should own. It uses three balls and three cups. The balls appear to magically penetrate the cups, travel from one place to another, vanish and more. This set is a big step up from the cheap plastic versions that come in most magic kits. This set also comes complete with instructions.

5. D’Lite – Junior Size – Red Pair

Magically pluck a ball of red light from the air, make it disappear, and more. It’s so simple to do, and a lot of fun to perform. This version is meant for the younger magician (10 years and younger), but adult sizes are available as well.

These 5 easy magic tricks have been the source of hours of amusement and delight for me and my family… and I hope they continue to do the same for you and yours.
