Planning your child’s 4th birthday party? The secret to keeping four-year-olds engaged and entertained at a birthday party is to plan activities (more than you think you’ll need) with lots of physical activity.
4 year old kids love to run, jump, dance, and be silly!

The Hokey Pokey: Form a standing circle, and play the Hokey Pokey Song. Match your movements to the lyrics of the song and have fun! After all, “that’s what it’s all about!”
Bubble Fun You can’t go wrong with bubbles at an outdoor birthday party! Go to your local pharmacy, grocery store or even online to purchase an assortment of bubble solution, bubble wands, and/or a bubble blowing machine. Have an adult blow the bubbles, and see how many the kids can pop!
Birthday Party Parade: Your four-year-old will be beaming with joy during this fun party game! Lay out some pots, pans, lids, wooden mixing spoons, and mixing bowls. Ask the kids if they’ve ever been to a parade before. Explain that we’re going to create a birthday party parade to celebrate. Invite the children to choose their favorite instrument. Once everyone has an instrument, establish a “start” and “stop” signal. Ask them to practice playing. What kinds of sounds can they make? Who can use their instrument to come up with a soft sound? A loud sound? Who can copy you? Then have the kids line up behind you with their instruments and join the birthday party parade!
Stick the Mustache on the Smiley 4 year olds always have a blast with this homemade twist on the famous “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” game. Before the party, use either paint or markers to draw a large circle on a sheet of newsprint. Draw eyes, a nose and a mouth. Then cut out a mustache from black construction paper. Put a piece of tape on the back of the mustache. During the party, have the kids take turns trying to stick the mustache under the nose without looking. If they stick it in the right place (and even if they don’t) they get a prize!
Beanbag Race: Obtain two differently colored beanbags (1 red and 1 blue, for example). Have all of the kids sit “criss-cross-apple-sauce” in a circle. Give the red beanbag to a child sitting at 3 o’clock, and the blue beanbag to a child sitting at 9 o’clock. See how quickly the kids can pass the beanbags around the circle. Can the beanbags catch each other? Which beanbag can go the fastest?!?
Guessing Bag: Fill up an opaque bag with objects that the kids are familiar with (a plastic fork, a block, a rubber ball, a rubber duck, etc.) Make sure you put at least 1 object per child in the bag. Have the kids reach into the bag and (without looking) guess one of the objects in the bag before pulling it out.
Super Silly Freeze Dance: Four-year-olds are notorious for their wiggles, and this is a super fun way to wiggle those waggles away! Create a mix of upbeat children’s music (Crocodile Rock, La Bamba, Bunny Hop, Let’s Twist Again, etc.). Explain that the rules to the game are that when the music is playing, everyone is moving. When the music stops, everyone stops. Practice moving and freezing. And then turn on the music and shake those wiggles out!
