Wondering what gift to get a young magician for his or her birthday?

If you feel overwhelmed, confused or don’t know where to start, you’re not alone! A google search for “magic tricks for kids” comes up with over 14,500,000 results…

…Yikes!

The good news is that, having been bitten by the magic bug over 23 years ago, I’ve bought hundreds of magic books, dvds and tricks, and can help you find the perfect gift for an aspiring magician.

Just read this post to discover 10 birthday party gift ideas for young magicians, and then take all the credit when their face lights up with delight!

Magic Books

Magic books make excellent gifts because they’re packed with secrets and subtly promote the habit of reading.

I have over 200 magic books in my collection (and counting!) and still can’t get enough.

Here are 3 books I recommend for kids starting out in magic:

The Klutz Book of Magic:

This was one of the first magic books I ever got, and I still perform and amaze people with some of the tricks in this book.

Mark Wilson’s Complete Course in Magic

Want to learn magic with cards? Coins? Rope? All of that (and a lot more) is in this book. Illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions make this a classic magic book that should be part of any magician’s collection.

Big Magic for Little Hands:

The problem with trying to do certain magic tricks when you’re a kid is that your hands are just too small. I wish this book was around when I was a kid! It’s over-sized and the material is specifically geared towards kids ages 7 and up.

Magic DVD’s

I learned how to perform magic by reading books and watching VHS tapes. Nowadays, kids start learning magic by reading books and watching…DVD’s.

Out of the hundreds of magic DVDs you could choose from, I’ve selected these 3 because they feature classic magic effects taught by some of the very best magicians in the world.

Michael Ammar Cups and Balls:

Michael Ammar has earned a reputation for being one of the best teachers in magic. This DVD set is the perfect compliment to the Cups and Balls Trick below.

The Secrets of the Linking Rings:

Magicians have been astonishing audiences for centuries with this classic of magic. This DVD features performances and explanations from 6 of the modern masters of magic: Jeff McBridge, Dan Harlan, Dan Fleshman, Aldo Colombini, Al Schneider, and Dai Vernon.

Self-Working Cards Tricks Volume 1:

If you’re looking for a gift for a young magician who loves cards, then this is the DVD for them. He or she will be performing astonishing magic tricks (that do no require knuckle-busting sleight-of-hand) in no time.

Magic Tricks

There are literally thousands of magic tricks you could choose from, but here are 4 sure-fire winners:

Cups and Balls:

A great set for beginners.

Linking Rings:

This set is the right size for young magicians.

Svengali Deck:

This is a trick deck that makes some really amazing effects possible. Instructions are included.

4-D Surprise by Tenyo Magic:

Your young magician will learn how to make the Statue of Liberty magically appear. The secret to this trick is so clever. Well made and easy to do.
