5 Tips for Planning Bring Your Child to Work Day in NYC
Thousands of workplaces across NYC will be participating in Bring Your Child to Work Day this year, which takes place on Thursday, April 25th, 2019.
It’s a time of year that Human Resource Managers and parents alike are asking themselves the same question: how can we make this an inspiring, fun and organized experience for our daughters, sons, and everyone involved?
I recently came across an article by Kelly Wallace with some helpful tips. In “A Survival Guide to Taking Your Kids to Work,” Wallace recommends:
- Making the day memorable
- Planning ahead
- Setting expectations for the children’s whereabouts
- Avoid having the kids do your work
- Rewarding them when it’s over
I’d also add that it’s important to…
- Invite everyone from volunteers to the CEO – even if they don’t have children. Including everyone will contribute to the the creation of a fun, inclusive workplace culture that people enjoy being part of.
- Plan age-specific activities, or narrow the age group: If you anticipate children of all ages, from babies to teenagers, then I highly recommend coordinating different tracks. An activity that keeps the toddlers engaged will bore the older kids, and vice versa.
- Find ways on this day – and throughout the year – to facilitate experiences for our kids and employees that foster autonomy, mastery and a sense of purpose. As noted in the Harvard Business Review, happier employees are more productive, engaged and creative.
