Planning a Halloween party for NYC kids is enough to boo-st any parent’s blood pressure, but there’s no need to fear… Magic Evan is here!
As a professional children’s magician, I’ve seen the Good, the Bad and the Ugly when it comes to planning a Halloween party for NYC kids.
In this article, I share the 5 simple steps for brewing up spook-tacular Halloween party fun!
First, send invites 4-6 weeks in advance via email or snail mail. This will give people plenty of time to respond… and if they don’t, they’ll be added to the witch’s brew! ;-)
Also, remember to include the date, time, location, encouragement to dress up, and a reminder to RSVP by a specific date.
Too busy to go to the post office? I like evite.com, paperlesspost.com, and greenenvelope.com for quickly sending and tracking invitations online.
Next, find a costume. Yes, for your little one… but for you, too! The more that join in this monster mash, the merrier.
Place a “DIY Costume Bin” at the front door (think oversized hats, glasses, wigs, ties, etc.) in case someone forgets or doesn’t have time to get a costume.
Third, start thinking about kid-friendly decoration ideas. Nothing too scary. Just fun.
To get the creative juices flowing, brainstorm all of the ways you can stimulate the 5 senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) to set the mood.
You may find the discount isle at Target handy. If you’re crafty, then check out these 126 Pinterest posts, this Huffington Post article, and Parents.com for more “not-so-spooky” ideas.
Fourth, create a menu they can sink their teeth into! What will kids and parents enjoy?
Check out these spooky halloween recipes, and your apartment will be the talk of the town.
And, honestly, it’s all in the name when it comes to serving Halloween party food. Pizza served on a tombstone becomes “Graveyard pizza,” etc. Bone-appetite!
Finally, plan to channel the energy (sugar!) into a structured activity. This could be a game, craft activity, or entertainment experience.
