Planning an in-person socially distant birthday party?
Even though it’s riskier, more families are finding creative ways to celebrate together during COVID-19.
As a professional magician, I’ve helped parents plan some amazing in-person birthday parties that leave the kids beaming with joy, belly-laughing and thanking their parents for the “most FUN party ever!”
In this article, I share some guidelines so that you can minimize risk of an in-person party, and ensure your child has a really fun and special birthday.
DO limit the size of the party to 10 or fewer people in total. Make it a drop-off party and/or limit the guests to your quarantine pod.
DON’T just wing it. Set clear grounds rules and plan to communicate with parents before, during and after the party
DO supervise the kids, and be ready to step in when a rule is forgotten or boundaries are accidentally crossed
DON’T serve communal food and beverages. Order personal pizzas, bottled water, etc.
DO follow good respiratory hygiene, and require guests to wash hands with soap and water and/or use alcohol-based hand rub regularly
DON’T have the party indoors. Indoor spaces are more risky because there’s less ventilation
DO plan a specific start and end time for the party. The risk of becoming infected or spreading the virus increases with the amount of time spent together
Deciding to plan an in-person socially distant birthday party is a tough decision, and you should make the right decision for you based on the current research and guidelines.
