The Simplest Ways to Avoid 7 Common Birthday Party Planning Mistakes

birthday party planning mistakes

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who will read this and avoid making the most common birthday party planning mistakes, and those that will say, “Ugh, I wish I thought about that before the party!”

Since you’re still reading, I’m guessing you belong in the way cooler, former category ;-)

It’s hard to remember EVERYTHING when planning your child’s party, and the good news is that you don’t have to!

After performing for over 3,000 birthday parties over the past 10 years, I’ve seen the most common birthday party planning mistakes, and am going to share them with you now so that you can spend more time on what matters most: enjoying this special day your child, friends and loved ones.

Planning Mistake #1: Forgetting the matches

This is so common that I carry an extra set of matches with me to every party!

Solution: Make a checklist. Get your ‘done-for-you’ checklist for FREE here.

Planning Mistake #2: Scheduling conflicts

You’re already juggling a million different things, which makes it easy for a holiday, school break or another family commitment to sneak up on you.

Solution: Before locking in the date, double-check the calendar for potential conflicts and see if your child’s best friend is available.

Planning Mistake #3: Hoping for good weather

Solution: Save yourself from the hassle, stress and disappointment of rescheduling by having a back-up plan.

Planning Mistake #4: Waiting until the last minute

Solution: Download my FREE birthday party planning guide, 7 Steps to a Great Birthday Party, which includes a party planning timeline, checklists, tips and more!

Planning Mistake #5: Over-stimulating

Sometimes too much fun can back-fire.

Solution: Ask this question throughout the party planning process: “What’s the #1 most important thing about my child’s birthday party?”

Planning Mistake #6: Scheduling the main event for the same time that the party starts

It usually takes 15-20 minutes for everyone to arrive and settle in. If you schedule a magic show for the same time that the party starts, then unfortunately most people won’t be there to enjoy the show.

Solution: Anticipate late arrivals and plan the fun accordingly so that everyone can take part.

Planning Mistake #7: Forgetting to enjoy the party

Solution: Delegate and hire help. It’s your special day, too, and you should be able to enjoy it!
