10 Tips for Throwing a Fun Birthday Party in Prospect Park

Brooklyn’s beautiful Prospect Park is a great place for a kid’s party, but there are some challenges that are unique to throwing a party in the Park that are easily overlooked or forgotten.

- Think safety first. Mark off the play area boundaries, keep a First Aid Kit handy, and bring lots of sunscreen (even on a cloudy day). Sprays tend to get in kids’ eyes, so I recommend lotion or sunscreen sticks.
- Inviting 20 or more guests? Apply for a special event permit 3-4 weeks in advance. For requirements, restrictions and the online application, visit their Permit Page or call (718) 965-8944
- Avoid disappointment by having an indoor back-up plan in case it rains.

- Bring towels, a large blanket, and covers for the food to keep the bugs away.
- Let the kids romp around, but control the pace of the party by planning outdoor party games and/or arranging some birthday party entertainment.
- Pack an ice cooler with lots of drinks. Kids need to stay hydrated and drink every 15-20 minutes.
- Remind guests to use the bathroom before the party. Portable toilets are located throughout the park (but you can’t count on them being the cleanest). “Comfort stations” are also available, but depending on your location, they may be a little bit of a walk. See the map.
