Planning a socially distanced birthday in New York? After spending months in quarantine, many NY families are ready to throw socially-distant birthday parties!
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve helped over 300 parents plan birthday parties for their children. In this article, I share my top tips for throwing the safe and special celebration your child deserves!
Follow Local Guidelines
As you know, different regions are re-opening at various paces, and guidelines may change from week-to-week.
Be sure to refer to New York State’s Department of Health website for the latest information.
Celebrate Outside
Research suggests that fresh air and adequate space helps reduce the risk of transmission.
Maintain Social Distance
Give each family their own space by setting up chairs, tables and or blankets (a.k.a. “magic carpets”) at least 6 feet apart.
Serve Individualized Food
As best you can, reduce common touch points. Think along the lines of personal pizzas, bottled beverages, and boxed lunches.
Limit attendance
Keep the guest list to your “quarantine pod” or people in the local area.
As ever, it’s important to follow local or state regulatory agency policies regarding the size of the party.
Communicate with parents
The #1 mistake parents make is not communicating enough. Avoid confusion or awkwardness by reaching out and being clear from the start.
For example, be clear about who’s invited, the duration of the party, activities, and precautions you’re taking.
Protect Yourself and Others
Some supplies you’ll want to have (and lots of!) include soap, water, hand sanitizer, paper towels, tissues, disinfectant wipes, cloth face coverings, and no-touch trash cans.
Above all, refer to the Center for Disease Control’s recommendations.
